Athens Kallithea launch their 2026/27 home and away shirts with a short film, Apopse.
“But besides winning matches, we took over this club because we wanted to be part of the conversation on how to fix things,” Ted Philipakos, President of Athens Kallithea told us in 2022.
Five years on from the takeover of the club by Ted and his brother Peter, Athens Kallithea have done more than contribute to a conversation. Back-to-back second-place finishes in the first two seasons were followed by the club’s promotion to the Super League — the top flight of Greek football — for the first time in 18 years.
In the 2026/27 season, the club will celebrate its 60th anniversary. It has, of late, announced several measures that will not only commemorate the milestone, but continue the work of improving and stimulating its immediate surroundings in the Athenian district of Kallithea.
In May it was announced that their historic Grigoris Lamprakis stadium — known coloquially as ‘El Paso’ — would undergo renovations to transform it into an ‘active hub of the community,’ creating a new epicentre of sport and leisure in the city.
Earlier this month, it kicked off a research project with Dr. Alexander Kitroeff, an author, historian and professor specialising in the Greek diaspora and Greek sport. It will chart and preserve the club’s founding era and its sociocultural impact on the neighbourhood of Kallithea.
Today, after forgoing the release of new home and away shirts for the 2025/26 season (citing ‘gross overproduction’), Athens Kallithea are back with new jerseys for their 60th anniversary season.
As we’ve come to expect from Athens Kallithea, they’re understated, elegant, and beautiful.
What we’ve also come to expect is an additional flair for storytelling. Accompanying the release is a short film directed by Theodore Selekos, entitled Apopse, after the titular 1963 song by the same name, written by Mimis Plessas. It’s delicate, romantic, enchanting.
